SUSTAINABILITY
Grateful to the Earth's gifts and with a commitment to
sustainability, we use biodegradable and recyclable
materials for our packaging.
If 10,000 Americans drank a box of Numi Organic Tea, we would
save 27 lbs. of pesticides, 239 lbs. of fertilizer, 12 trees, 792 lbs. of
landfill and will have contributed $400 to Fair Trade tea gardens.
BAMBOO
We have chosen bamboo for our gift boxes and merchandising not
only for how its beauty compliments tea, but also for of its
sustainability and abundance. Bamboo is recognized as an
organic, earth friendly material, known for its fast re-growth,
high strength, and ease to work with. Bamboo is one of the most
untapped and renewable natural resources.
After a bamboo tree is cut down, another bamboo shoot will
sprout up and grow approximately 6 feet within a month.
After 2 years, the new bamboo shoot will be fully mature
at a length of 30-40 feet. in its third year, the bamboo
tree can be cut for use. This re-growth process is endless and
the same small plot of land will continuously yield a
replenishable supply. Bamboo is also one of the easiest
trees to replant. When cut, it can be placed directly into
the soil, naturally resuming its growth in its new home.
The farmers and producers of our bamboo boxes and tea chests
live and work in a remote area in the central region of China
where an abundance of bamboo grows wild throughout the countryside.
They maintain a 3-year cyclical pattern of cutting, cultivating,
and replenishing the bamboo in their region. During our recent
visit, the Numi team was amazed by both this plant's sustainability
and by its resilience along the banks of the river. In using bamboo
for our packaging, we hope to set an example and heighten the
awareness of this renewable resource. Numi also continues its
efforts to support a stronger alliance with these farmers and
producers by creating partnerships that increase the quality of
life of our workers.
ECO-CONSCIOUS PACKAGING
Our teabags are made from natural fibers with a double chamber to release
the subtle flavors each tea and herb has to offer. We don't follow the trend of
using "silky" nylon or biodegradable GMO-based cornstarch tea bags.
The over-wraps consist of four layers to preserve flavor and freshness.
Numi tea box cartons are made with 85% post-consumer waste -
annually conserving over 2,000 trees and reducing landfills by
131,000 pounds. Numi has made a conscious choice to eliminate
the use of cello-wrap for its packaging.
IN-HOUSE PRACTICES
We continue our commitment to environmental responsibility in our
warehouse operations, where we only use recyclable and biodegradable
materials for the packaging of our products. All of our shipping boxes and
supplies are recyclable and most contain recycled and post consumer waste
material. In addition, we minimize our energy use by enjoying the natural
light that showers through the multiple skylights in our warehouse and
distribution center. Throughout our entire facility, we practice thorough
recycling and composting programs.
